    Residential Lock Changes

    Changing locks is an important part of keeping intruders out of your home by ensuring previous residents, renters, contractors, dog walkers or house cleaners no longer have access. You really don’t know how many keys are in circulation unless you change the locks. Whether purchasing an older home or a new home you should change locks to ensure any former key holders do not re-enter the home. The final keys meant for new owners often exchange hands many times during the final stages of new construction even after the “construction keys” have been locked out. We recommend changing the locks to all properties as the cost of a burglary is usually many times higher that of a lock change.

    Changing locks on a house where there is multiple doors requires a little bit of forethought

    • Do you want the same key to work in multiple locks or do you want to have a separate key for a back door or side door or for the garage door?
    • Do you want to use part of the house as a suite either now or in the future?
    • Are you going to have locks on internal doors such as bedrooms?
    • If part of the house is going to be used as a private suite how will you ensure both sides don’t have access to each other?

    Prevention Warning: We have known of situations where former residents of houses returning to burglarize the properties that they used to live in using key copies when the locks have not been changed. We have also known of instances where new residents were told that the locks were changed when internal evidence has shown that the locks were never changed from the original key. A simple key change could have saved the owners from the costs of stolen belongings and damaged property repairs.

    Changing locks for apartments and townhouses where you only have the one door keeps things more simple. But don’t forget

    • Were you given a key to your mailbox? We can change your apartment mailbox lock as well.
    • Many apartments are built with a master key system. This can reduce the security of the lock as well as put you at risk from more key holders including master key holders. Also cheap locks often used by builders have some issues with master key systems and have been known fail at inopportune times leaving residents locked out. It’s best to get that master keyed system out of your lock and this can be done with a simple lock change off the original key.

    Prevention Warning: We have known of major break ins where numerous condominium units have been broken in from the use of a master key and master fob that have been stolen. Our clients have come home to find their entire apartment turned upside down including having their food eaten and bed used! This could have been avoided with a simple lock change upon moving in.

    Commercial Lock Changes

    Commercial properties have different concerns than residential properties when it comes to key control and security. Changing Locks on a business is often needed when key holding employees are terminated and keys are not returned or when keys could have been copied. Managers and business owners of companies with high staff turnover may want to include a regular lock change into their security routine. Another option is to have high security locks and/or a restricted key system installed. Having locks installed that use restricted keys ensure maximum protection against internal security issues such as unauthorized key duplication and high security locks are the best lock to use to prevent against external threats such as forced entry or a surreptitious entry through manipulation of the internal parts of a lock.
