A key-stuck-in-lock situation often occurs due to some failing of the lock. Sometimes it’s regular wear as internal screws loosen or it could be a missing screw. We have known some poorer quality locks to have problems with master pins jamming in the shear line. It could be that it was pinned poorly such as over stacking a pin column. And sometimes someone has jammed the wrong key into the keyway or it could be any of a number of other reasons. Usually in these situations the lock can be repaired and the key re-used after service.

A key-broke-off-in-lock situation often occurs with old locks and keys. It also often occurs with a poorly copied key or a poorly keyed lock cylinder. Sometimes someone was just rough with the key. This is often the case with a poor quality copy or old worn key that sticks easily. It’s important to never force a key if a key sticks shake the key while gently trying to turn it or try it in slightly different positions. This will get you inside or get the door locked but you should make an appointment with a professional locksmith to service the lock. Otherwise you may get locked out when the lock fails or key breaks and have to wait for an emergency locksmith at an inconvenient time.
