To properly prevent a burglary or theft it’s important to have appropriate locks installed even before considering reinforcing the door or door frame. Different locks are appropriate to different situations dependent upon usage, location and risks.

For example a single family home such as a house or apartment unit should have at least one deadbolt on each exterior set of doors–a locking door knob or locking lever is insufficient. And an exterior door used by many users of different apartment units should have an automatically locking lock–usually a lever or panic bar. These lever sets can be reinforced to prevent against break-and-enter.

For an office or a small business a lock more appropriate to emergency egress or a lock with key control features limiting key duplication may be more appropriate.
