Generally when locksmiths talk about getting the locks changed they are talking about rekeying locks. Rekeying locks is the process of opening the lock, removing the lock cylinder then opening up the cylinder and changing the parts that make up the code of the lock so that a new key operates the lock and the old key no longer opens it. Rekeying is often the most cost effective way of changing a lock but some locks, such as mailbox locks, are not designed to be rekeyed in the field.
Keying Options
- Keying Alike is when two or more locks are operated by the same key. This is as opposed to Keying Different where separate keys are used to operate different locks.
- Master Keying is when a multi level key system is used. It is the simplest form you can have two locks that are operated with their own individual user keys and one master key that can open both locks. Master keying is useful when you have different levels of access in a business or in a home that’s been divided into rental rooms suck as a bed-and-breakfast or a ‘home hotel’.
