Security Improvements

When it comes to spending some time and money on improving security we often hear people say, “If they want to get in they’re going to get in.” This is not the case.

Most burglary is opportunistic, that is burglars are generally looking for easy targets rather than choosing targets regardless of the difficultly and risks. There are of course exceptions and targeted break-ins do occur and we do have ways of reducing targeted break-ins. Targeted break-ins may occur to businesses where the contents of a building is obvious such as a camera shop. Or they can occur at a residence by someone after belongings or information during the messy end of a relationship or by a thief targeting jewelry seen worn outside the home. But even these targeted thefts can be prevented with a little consideration and an often minor upgrade to the physical security of the property.

Target Hardening

These security upgrades are sometimes called target hardening as they are making the target of the would be thief or intruder harder or more difficult to reach. We have often responded to calls for door repairs or lock repairs resulting from burglaries that could have been easily prevented and we have often seen attempted burglaries that were prevented by levels of physical security. So no. If they want to get in but you have good physical security in place they will try a more attractive target first or fail to get in when trying.

We provide target hardening solutions and security improvements based upon years of experience with the results of real burglaries and home invasions and by keeping informed of both actual security breaches and possible breaches to the security of small businesses and homes.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This old saying is especially appropriate to burglary prevention: The costs of a break-and-enter (repair costs, lost time in arranging the repairs, business downtime and the added stress of experiencing a burglary) often outweigh the cost of the security installations that would have been necessary to prevent the break-in from occurring.

Security Doors & Security Screen Doors

One of the best ways to improve security to your door in through the installation of a Steel Bar Security door or a Security Screen door made with woven high tensile steel mesh anchored securely into it’s frame. Adding a door that swings outward to an inward swinging door greatly increases the difficulty a criminal has to go through to break into your property and is an easily recognizable security feature that prevents one from trying in the first place. With a security screen door you can leave the door open for ventilation but locked and not have to worry about an intruder or bugs.

Window Bars & Security Screens for Windows

To prevent glass from being broken and a burglar or other criminal entering through the broken window we install Security Window Bars. Security Window Screens can prevent burglars and vandals from breaking glass as well as prevent bugs from entering while providing secure ventilation. You can leave the window open with out worry of an intruder or bugs.

Door Security Improvements

Deadbolt Locks

A deadbolt lock is your basic door security hardware. An ANSI grade 1 or 2 is best for most applications. This is a rating for durability, cycling, and security from forced attacks.

Door Reinforcement to Prevent Forced Entry

Reinforcing doors and jambs with security hardware can provide additional support for the areas around where the deadbolt or latch engages the door jamb. Reinforcing is typically done in this order:

  1. If there is no deadbolt install a Grade 2 Deadbolt or a Grade 1 Deadbolt for higher security. Or improve a residential deadbolt (Unrated or ANSI Grade 3) to a Grade 2 or Grade 1 Deadbolt
  2. Install a Security Strike Plate on a wooden door frame
  3. Install a Door Reinforcer on wood doors or a Cover Guard Plate on hollow steel doors and aluminum framed glass doors
  4. Install an Interlocking Latch Guard or a Full Length Interlocking Latch Guard on in-swinging doors and a Latch Guard Plate on out-swinging doors

Door Security for When You are at Home

A heavy duty door guard or turn side only deadbolt can lock out key-holders or add extra security while at home or secure a door when another exit door is available to leave from. Excellent for basement or seldom used doors.

Pick Resistant Pins

Protection from Lock Picking and Bump Keys

Pick resistant pins are installed to resist picking attempts. Bump resistant mechanisms are installed to prevent bumping attempts. Rare and paracentric keyways can be installed to complicate lock picking and bumping attempts. High security lock can be installed to prevent key duplication as well as preventing attempts to lock picking or lock bumping.

Door Glass Security

Window bars are installed to prevent intrusion through broken glass. Window bars with hinges are available to allow for emergency egress. Folding gates achieve the same goal but allow for better presentation when not in use. Also privacy blinds can prevent would-be burglars from peeking inside to check if anyone is home or the see if there is anything they might want to steal.

Various door viewers can improve the angle of viewing. Also door viewers with shutters can prevent reverse viewing attempts and changes in light used to confirm occupants.
